A murder is promptly committed at Beaumont's estate, and Lake and March launch their investigations, centering on a certain unstylish blonde wig and a trio of dangerous, dowagers. Quick, a pseudonym for prolific romance author Jayne Anne Krentz, relies on her quicksilver sense of humor and tart research into period hairdressers and British upper-crust society. Lake and March's lusty if predictable romps should please Quick fans, as should the contrasting "demure" period flirtation between Lake's niece, Emeline , and March's adopted brother, Anthony, which is tested by the arrival of Dominic Hood, Anthony's half-brother, suggesting future fireworks.

Lake and March work together to find the killer and prevent other murders. Their first move is to attend a country house party, to steal a little time for romance and find a few clues.
In this era, the aristocracy did not have to speak to the police, and murderers need access to the victims as well. This is the final episode of the trilogy. Hopefully, Ms. Quick will change her mind and continue the series. Lavinia, Tobias, Emeline, and Anthony are too good to let go. Recommended as a book and as a series. Pace: fast Characters: well-developed for genre; likeable; extended cast of characters Story: Writing style: Banter-filled; engaging Tone: Steamy; strong sense of place; suspenseful Frame: London, a country house; The Ms.
Quick romance tropes and light mystery abound here; there is nothing awful about the writing as expected but this book and especially the romance should have ended in book 2. The leads are not still not married here and the dynamics of the affair remain pretty much the same as Book 2. It would have been more interesting if the romance had show the post-marriage life as it would have provided a better pace to the romance and given the trilogy some symmetry that it needed. The mystery was simple and competent enough but hardly gets much attention, unlike Book 1.
There was an attempt to mirror and contrast this mystery from the one in Book 2. Book 2 was about a case brought on by Lavinia, this one is about March and his history - a gender swap as it were. Nonetheless, the dynamics of the sleuthing partnership did not change.
Lavinia Lake and Tobias March [abridged]

There were no real stakes in the mystery which is generally the issue with Ms. Overall - this was a competent but not compelling book. I give it an average 2 stars in the end. There is also the incidence of one of the guests falling from the castle roof late at night, which Tobias and Lavinia do not believe was accidental. The characters and dialogue are smart and humorous, as always. May 06, SaDeAn rated it really liked it Shelves: 4-great-job-stars , borrowed , audio-book , f-m-romance , crime-sleuth.
I wish I had read the prior books, but can happily confirm that one can enjoy this without having read its predecessors. Highlights here include a strong-willed female who does get things right, a good narrator, descriptions that bring to mind strong images without being flowery, and some intriguing murders to investigate.
